Meta is cutting about 600 positions from its artificial intelligence (AI) division as part of a major reorganization aimed at improving efficiency.
Meta’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said the restructuring would make decision-making faster and give remaining staff greater responsibility. American employees were notified of their status Wednesday morning. The company said affected workers are encouraged to apply for other internal roles.
Despite the cuts, Meta continues to hire AI developers and recently recruited OpenAI research scientist Ananya Kumar and Thinking Machines cofounder Andrew Tulloch. The shake-up follows CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s concerns that existing AI efforts were not producing breakthroughs, prompting new investments and leadership changes.
