Northern Cape police have issued a warning about a surge in online vehicle auction scams appearing in other provinces, urging residents to be cautious ahead of the festive season. Scammers are cloning the websites and adverts of reputable banks and auctioneers, tricking buyers into paying deposits for cars that do not exist.

Although no local cases have been reported, the SAPS says the risk is growing and advises the public to verify auctioneers, inspect vehicles in person, and avoid unrealistically low offers. Residents are urged to report suspected fraud to Crime Stop or through the MySAPS app.
