Protests have spread across Tanzania after elections, which have widely been denounced as fraudulent, handed President Samia Suluhu Hassan a near-total victory. Clashes erupted in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mwanza, after Wednesday’s poll, with police firing tear gas and imposing a curfew as unrest spilled into Kenyan border towns. Opposition leader Tundu Lissu remains jailed on treason charges, and other rivals were barred from running. Amnesty International condemned the violence and internet shutdowns, while the EU called the vote a: “fraud unfolding for months,” accusing the government of crushing democratic freedoms.
