A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan late Monday, shaking buildings across Aomori and Hokkaido and injuring at least 33 people. Small tsunamis of up to 70 cm were recorded, and about 800 homes briefly lost power.

Tsunami advisories were lifted after inspections found no major coastal damage. Rail services were suspended and authorities warned residents to prepare for strong aftershocks and the possibility of further seismic activity.
