Officials in the Swiss resort of Crans Montana say the bar where a New Year’s fire killed 40 people had not been inspected for more than five years, with the last recorded fire safety check in 2019.

Investigators are examining whether celebratory sparklers or similar items ignited ceiling materials. A criminal probe is under way as authorities review enforcement failures and consider tougher rules on indoor pyrotechnics.
