Syria has joined the Global Coalition to Defeat Islamic State by signing a political co-operation agreement during President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s visit to the United States. The move was paired with a partial easing of US sanctions.

While the accord does not yet include military co-operation, it signals a major shift in Syria’s international alignment and opens potential for deeper Western engagement.
