Thousands of tourists were left stranded in Finnish Lapland after flights at Kittila airport were cancelled when temperatures plunged to negative 37C, disrupting aircraft deicing and other ground operations.

Finland’s Meteorological Institute forecast the cold would intensify, with temperatures near minus 40C expected, while local media reported the disruption followed several days of severe frosts around the Levi ski resort.
