Donald Trump announced plans to add an extra 10% tariff on Canadian imports after an Ontario-funded TV ad used Ronald Reagan clips to attack tariffs during World Series Game 1. He called the ad a: “fraud” and a: “hostile act,” and alleged it aimed to sway a pending Supreme Court case on his tariff powers. Ontario Premier Doug Ford paused the campaign, though prebooked spots still aired.

Key details remain unclear, including which goods are covered and when any increase would take effect. The move adds friction to a relationship already shaped by U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum and lumber, even as many goods remain duty free under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Despite both leaders attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings in Malaysia, Trump said he has no plans to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney.
