A giant 243 kg bluefin tuna sold for 510 million yen, about $3.2 million, at the first 2026 auction at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market. The buyer was Kiyomura Corp, which runs the Sushi Zanmai chain, led by Kiyoshi Kimura, known as the “Tuna King”.

Reports say the tuna was caught off Oma in northern Japan and will be served across the chain. The price beat Kimura’s previous record from 2019, as the annual New Year auction again delivered a headline grabbing sale.
