The United States has rejected India’s request for consultations at the World Trade Organisation over new tariffs on copper imports, saying the measures are not safeguards. Washington insists the 50% duties, which took effect on 1 August, were imposed on national security grounds.

India had sought to challenge the tariffs as safeguards and reserve the right to retaliate but the US response blocks that route for now.
