The killing of security boss and former police officer Marius van der Merwe outside his Brakpan home has raised alarm that the attack was a targeted assassination linked to his anti-crime work.

Colleagues say other security operators who testified about illegal mining and police corruption fear they are on an informal hit list, while investigators search for the gunmen and probe possible links to organised crime.
