A motion of no confidence (MONC) in KwaZulu-Natal premier, Thami Ntuli, failed in the province’s legislature today.

The MONC was brought by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK).

KwaZulu-Natal is currently governed by a Government of Provincial Unity (GPU). The coalition is made up of Ntuli’s party, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance, and the National Freedom Party (NFP).

Together the four parties hold a narrow 41-seat majority in the 80-member provincial legislature, with MK having 37 seats and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) having two.

There had been speculation that the NFP would support the MK MONC, but it seems that the NFP decided to support the GPU.

The MONC failed with 40 members voting against it, and 39 for.

Legislators from MK had attempted to disrupt proceedings prior to the vote, saying that they had been intimidated, and demanded a secret ballot. This request was denied by the speaker.

Police were called into the legislature with scuffles breaking out between officers and MK and EFF members, who were wearing combat fatigues and red overalls respectively, before representatives of the two parties were physically removed.

An MK representative, Ntombi Zama Cele, collapsed during the fracas and had to be treated by paramedics.
