The United States (US) Senate has confirmed John Giordano as the new US Ambassador to Namibia. Giordano, an attorney from Pennsylvania, has previously served as Acting US Attorney for the District of New Jersey, as Deputy General Counsel during the Trump transition, and represented the United States at the United Nations in 2019.

In his confirmation process, Giordano set out priorities that include protecting American citizens and interests, promoting trade and investment, and advancing co-operation in energy and critical minerals. The appointment comes as Washington’s relationship with South Africa stumbles, prompting a quiet shift of regional focus toward Namibia.

Namibia is well positioned to become a key US ally in Africa. It is democratic, has a free press, and holds vast natural resources. A recent oil discovery could see the country emerge as one of Africa’s wealthiest economies if its government makes the right policy moves.
