South Africa stormed into a dominant position in the second Test in Guwahati after Marco Jansen produced a devastating spell that shredded India’s batting order and pushed the world champions to the brink of a rare series victory on Indian soil.
India were bundled out for 201, collapsing from 95 for 1 to 122 for 7 as Jansen’s relentless short-ball assault ripped through their middle and lower order. His 6 for 48, including four dismissals via bouncers on an otherwise forgiving pitch, marked one of the most hostile fast bowling displays seen in India in recent years and he was ably supported by offspinner, Simon Harmer. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal with 58 and Washington Sundar with 48 offered meaningful Indian resistance.
Jansen’s dominance followed his career-best 93 in South Africa’s first-innings total of 489, underlining a match-defining all-round performance. His athletic diving catch to remove Jaiswal, India’s only half-centurion of the series, further compounded the hosts’ problems.
India’s batting inexperience showed as the top order unravelled under pressure, with captain Rishabh Pant falling early while attempting to counterattack and the middle order succumbing to poor shot selection against spin and pace. Washington and Kuldeep Yadav later steadied briefly once the pitch flattened, but the damage was long done.
South Africa closed day three on 26 without loss, stretching their lead to 314. With an unassailable 1-0 advantage already secured, the visitors are now only sessions away from clinching a landmark series sweep in India.
