In a tense second ODI in Raipur, South Africa overcame India’s daunting total of 358, winning by four wickets with just four balls to spare, thanks to a stunning century by Aiden Markram. Despite centuries from Virat Kohli (102) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105), India’s score was not enough to withstand the dew-heavy conditions, allowing the Proteas to chase down the target in a dramatic finish.

South Africa’s decision to bowl first seemed to have backfired as Kohli and Gaikwad guided the team to a solid total. Gaikwad notched his maiden ODI century, while Kohli continued his prolific form with his second consecutive century. But Markram’s attacking 110, his first in an ODI chase, along with key contributions from Matthew Breetzke (68) and Dewald Brevis (54), helped South Africa recover from a late wobble to complete the chase.

Markram’s hundred off 88 balls set the tone for the chase, with South Africa well-positioned despite a mid-innings mini-collapse. When Brevis fell for 54 and Breetzke was dismissed shortly after, South Africa required 37 runs off 33 balls with just four wickets remaining. The match seemed in the balance as Tony de Zorzi limped off the field with a hamstring injury, adding to the drama, leaving South Africa effectively seven down.

Yet, Corbin Bosch’s enterprise and Keshav Maharaj’s calmness saw the Proteas home, leaving India to rue missed chances. South Africa’s victory, set up by Markram’s brilliance, ensured a decider in Visakhapatnam, adding to the excitement of the series.

India lost their 20th consecutive toss in ODI cricket, with captain KL Rahul visibly exasperated.

With the series now tied at 1-1, both teams head to the third ODI, where the outcome remains anyone’s guess in what has become a thrilling series.
