South Africa will be without Kagiso Rabada for the remainder of their tour of India after the fast bowler was ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati with a rib bone stress injury.

Rabada had already missed the Kolkata opener and, despite close monitoring by team medics, continued to experience discomfort that prevented him from returning to full training. Cricket South Africa confirmed this morning that he has been withdrawn from the series and will begin the first phase of a four-week rehabilitation programme before flying home after the Test.

His absence is a significant setback for a side looking to build on their historic victory in Kolkata, where Simon Harmer’s eight-wicket match haul set up a rare away win in India. Keshav Maharaj partnered him as the second spinner, while Marco Jansen led the seam attack with support from Wiaan Mulder and Corbin Bosch.

With Rabada unavailable, Lungi Ngidi is the remaining frontline fast bowler, but it remains to be seen if the Proteas will tinker with the winning XI from Eden Gardens as they aim to clinch a landmark series win.
