The Indian Premier League (IPL) is, by every measure, the biggest cricket league on the planet. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has transformed the sport's landscape, turning the Board of Control for Cricket in India into one of the richest governing bodies in world sport.
The league generates over $11 billion for the Indian economy annually, and in 2022, broadcast rights for five seasons sold for $6.2 billion. For roughly two months each year, the world's best cricketers descend on India for a tournament that blends sport, spectacle, and serious money.
The 2026 edition, the nineteenth season, kicked off on 28 March with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Seventeen South Africans feature across the ten franchises this year. Most were retained from their 2025 squads, with four new signings coming through the mini auction held in December 2025.
Here is a breakdown of every South African in IPL 2026, organised by team, and how much they are earning for the season.
Chennai Super Kings
Dewald Brevis: R8.4 million
The 22-year-old "Baby AB" is now in his second season with Chennai Super Kings. He has played 16 IPL matches across three seasons since debuting with Mumbai Indians in 2022. So far, his best campaign was last season, when he scored 225 runs at a strike rate of 180 with two 50s. He also recently climbed into the top ten in the ICC T20 batting rankings.
Delhi Capitals
Tristan Stubbs: R18 million
Stubbs remains at Delhi Capitals after two strong seasons. He now has 705 IPL runs at an average of 41.47 and a strike rate of 163, having made his debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2022. However, his break-out season was in 2024 when he scored 378 runs at a strike rate of 191. He also captained the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in their victorious campaign in this year’s SA20.
David Miller: R4.2 million
The veteran finisher moves to Delhi after a poor 2025 with Lucknow Super Giants, where his top score was just 27 not out in 11 matches. He is one of the longest-serving South Africans in IPL history, with over 140 matches for the Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab), Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, and Lucknow Super Giants. His greatest IPL moment was when he hit a famous 38-ball century for Punjab in 2013 and he was also key to Gujarat's 2022 title win. He made his IPL debut in 2012 for Punjab.
Lungi Ngidi: R4.2 million
The tall right-arm seamer has made the move to Delhi. While he has had limited IPL game time, with just 16 matches, he has one of the best bowling averages in tournament history, with 18.24. He made his IPL debut in 2018 for Chennai Super Kings, before moving to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025.
Gujarat Titans
Kagiso Rabada: R18 million
South Africa's premier fast bowler stays at Gujarat Titans. He had a disrupted 2025 IPL season, playing only four matches due to a doping ban, and will be looking to make up for lost time. However, he is one of the most prolific overseas bowlers in IPL history, with nearly 120 wickets. He won the 2020 Purple Cap (which is awarded to the leading wicket-taker for the season) with 30 wickets for Delhi Capitals. He made his IPL debut in 2017 for Delhi, then known as the Daredevils.
Lucknow Super Giants
Aiden Markram: R14 million
South Africa's T20 captain stays at Lucknow Super Giants after a stellar 2025, where he scored 445 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of nearly 149, with five 50s. This is his third IPL team, having previously played for Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Anrich Nortje: R4.2 million
The big fast bowler moves to Lucknow Super Giants after a disappointing 2025 with Kolkata Knight Riders, where he played just two matches due to injury. He is one of the fastest bowlers in IPL history, having been clocked at 156km/h in 2020, the season he made his debut in the IPL, for the Delhi Capitals.
Matthew Breetzke: R850 000
The big-hitting batter from the Eastern Cape was given just one match in his debut season for Lucknow in 2025, scoring 14 off 12 balls. However, a strong 2026 SA20 campaign with champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape, where he scored nearly 300 runs at an average touching 40, should see him given more opportunities in this year’s IPL.
Mumbai Indians
Ryan Rickelton: R2 million
The left-handed opener returns after a breakout debut season in 2025, where he scored 388 runs at a strike rate of 151 with three 50s. He is already off to a strong start this season, having scored 81 in the opening match for Mumbai against Kolkata, to help them to victory.
Quinton de Kock: R2.1 million
Veteran Protea De Kock returns to the Mumbai Indians, where he won titles in 2019 and 2020. He has played for six IPL franchises since making his debut in 2013 and is only the third South African to have scored more than 3 000 runs in the IPL, after AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.
Corbin Bosch: R1 million
The all-rounder returns after featuring in just three matches in his debut IPL season in 2025. However, he will be looking forward to having a bigger role to play this season, having had an assured start to his international career since making his Proteas debut at the end of 2024. He is currently ranked 7th in the Men's T20I bowling rankings.
Punjab Kings
Marco Jansen: R12 million
The towering fast-bowling all-rounder stays at Punjab Kings after taking 16 wickets in 14 matches in 2025 as the franchise reached the IPL final last season. He has previously played for Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad and will hope this season he can help Punjab get across that line.
Rajasthan Royals
Kwena Maphaka: R1.5 million
The teenage left-arm quick has played just four matches in the IPL, two each in 2024 and 2025. But, at still only 19, he remains one of the most exciting fast-bowling prospects in world cricket.
Donovan Ferreira: R1.5 million
Ferreira, who bats, bowls, and keeps wicket, has not been able to take his IPL opportunities, having debuted for the Rajasthan Royals in 2024 before moving to the Delhi Capitals in 2025. Over those two seasons he has only played three IPL games, and has moved back to the Royals this season, and will be hoping he gets more opportunities.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius: R850 000
The 20-year-old sensation earned a spot as an injury replacement in 2025 but arrived too late to make an impact, playing just one game for the Royals, but did not get a chance to bat. He will hope for proper game time this year.
Nandre Burger: R1.2 million
The left-arm fast bowler had a good season for the Rajasthan Royals in 2024, playing six matches, but didn’t manage to get a run for them in 2025. The left-arm quick, who has had some problems with injuries, will be hoping to have a sustained run in the side this season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Heinrich Klaasen: R48 million
Klaasen is the highest-paid South African in IPL history, and with good reason. In his last three seasons for Sunrisers, he has scored over 400 runs at a strike rate above 170 in each of his three seasons. His 2025 campaign included 487 runs and an innings of 105 not out off 39 balls, the joint third-fastest century in IPL history.
Notable Absences
Several South Africans went unsold at the December 2025 mini auction, including Gerald Coetzee, Wiaan Mulder, Reeza Hendricks, and George Linde. Faf du Plessis retired from the IPL after the 2025 season, ending a decorated career spanning 154 IPL matches and 4 773 runs.
The Bigger Picture
This IPL 2026 season follows a year of historic achievement for South African cricket. In 2025, eight Proteas players were recalled from the IPL to prepare for the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's, which South Africa won. Then, in the early months of 2026, the Proteas reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup under Aiden Markram's captaincy.
The IPL remains the richest league in world cricket, and South Africa continues to supply some of its most valued talent. Whether it is Heinrich Klaasen's brutality against spin, Kagiso Rabada's searing pace, or Ryan Rickelton's emergence at the top of the order, the green-and-gold contingent will once again be central to the drama.
