Andrea Johnson’s NDPP Chances Rocked by 2007 Scorpions Conflict Row

Andrea Johnson’s bid to become National Director of Public Prosecutions has been thrown into doubt after an ethics outcry over her involvement in a 2007 hiring process that appointed her husband to the Scorpions. The NDPP selection panel said it received more than 200 public submissions flagging a potential conflict of interest.

Johnson insisted she had disclosed the relationship and recused herself where necessary, but panel members said the process was irregular and damaged confidence in her independence. Civil society groups have urged that she not be appointed, arguing the controversy raises serious questions about accountability in the prosecuting authority.
