Jakob September, a 44-year-old convicted rapist, escaped from Helderstroom Maximum Correctional Centre near Caledon over the weekend while performing work duties in the prison’s dairy section. Authorities launched a large-scale search, using drones and thermal imaging to track him overnight.

September was found and arrested near a river around 9 PM on Sunday, ending the brief manhunt. The incident has sparked calls from opposition parties for accountability from prison and police officials, who are investigating how the escape was possible.
