Reports say at least 41 initiates died in November and December during the summer initiation season, with Eastern Cape reported as the worst hit. Authorities say arrests have been made linked to illegal initiation schools and safety breaches.

Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa warned there would be a "huge war" if traditional circumcision were banned, arguing the focus should be stricter enforcement and safer practices rather than prohibition.
