A search is under way for a five-year-old boy reported missing after floodwaters swept him away in Mbaula village outside Giyani on 15 January 2026. Police say the incident happened as his mother tried to flee their home as it filled with water.

The mother survived by clinging to a tree until she could be rescued. SAPS Search and Rescue teams, SANDF and other emergency services have continued searching in dangerous conditions.
