Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s legal team is seeking his transfer back to Gauteng after he was moved to the eBongweni super maximum facility in Kokstad, KwaZulu Natal. Lawyers argue the distance and detention conditions are undermining consultations and prejudicing his right to a fair trial.

Proceedings in the Johannesburg High Court were paused while the issue is addressed. Matlala is expected back in court on 6 February 2026. The state reportedly said it was not consulted on the transfer decision, and Correctional Services must explain why he should remain in Kokstad.
