The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has returned R1.7bn to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), funds recovered from universities and unqualified students. The amount was taken from unallocated funds between 2016 and 2021.

This recovery is part of a broader effort by the SIU to improve governance and ensure NSFAS resources are used appropriately.
