Jan Lotz, a 78-year-old emeritus professor at Stellenbosch University, says teaching gave his life renewed meaning after the murder of his daughter Inge. He recently completed a PhD in applied ethics dedicated to her memory.
Lotz said mentoring young doctors helped him process grief and rebuild purpose. His doctoral work examines ethical questions around South Africa’s proposed National Health Insurance, with the dedication simply reading “For Inge”.
