Two competitors, aged 29 and 58, died during the swimming leg of the Ironman 70.3 race, a half distance version of the Ironman, in Mossel Bay yesterday after experiencing separate medical emergencies about fifteen minutes apart. Both were pulled from the water, treated on scene, and taken to hospital, where they were declared dead.

Police have opened inquest dockets to determine the cause of death. Ironman South Africa extended condolences and said athlete safety remains a priority as investigations continue.
