Walmart will officially open its first fully branded South African store this Saturday, launching at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort. The move marks the US retailer’s formal entry into the market, despite already owning Massmart subsidiaries such as Game, Makro, and Builders following its full buyout in 2022.

The rollout of Walmart branded outlets began in September 2025, positioning the chain to compete with Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, and Amazon. The retailer says customers can expect everyday low prices and a blend of local and imported products.
