South African authorities allegedly raided a United States (US) refugee facility in Johannesburg yesterday, briefly detaining two US government employees who were supporting refugee admissions work linked to the Trump administration’s Afrikaner resettlement initiative.
The two officials were later released after questioning. Kenyan nationals working with the US State Department were also reportedly detained and later released.
The alleged incident comes amid strained relations between Pretoria and Washington, with South Africa publicly criticising the US for prioritising white Afrikaners as refugees to the country. The White House has claimed that white South Africans are facing genocide and having their property seized, a claim which Pretoria has denied.
