Pretoria has no shortage of Easter services over the long weekend, but three stand out for their setting, tradition, and atmosphere. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart offers a formal Catholic observance in the city centre. St Albans Cathedral offers a quieter Anglican service. Central Baptist offers a sunrise gathering on Easter Sunday. Together, they provide three very different ways to mark Easter in Pretoria.
For a traditional Easter service in one of Pretoria’s best-known church settings, start at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pretoria Central, at the corner of Bosman and Nana Sita streets. The cathedral’s regular Sunday masses are at 08:30, noon, and 17:30, with weekday mass at 17:30. Its established Holy Week programme includes Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at noon, the Good Friday liturgy at 15:00, the Easter Vigil at 19:00, and Easter Sunday Mass at 08:30.
The first church on the site was built in 1877. The present cathedral was built in stages, with the nave constructed in 1933, and was completed in 1948. That long history gives Easter at Sacred Heart a strong sense of continuity. It remains one of the best places in Pretoria to experience the older liturgical shape of Holy Week and Easter.
St Albans Cathedral offers a more reflective Easter setting in the Anglican tradition. The cathedral is in Pretoria Central, and its listed Sunday services are a Said Eucharist at 07:30 and a Eucharist with music at 09:30.
St Albans has stood for well over a century. Plans for the cathedral were drawn up in 1905, the foundation stone was laid in 1908, the chancel was consecrated in 1909, and the wider cathedral development was completed in 1958. Easter here is about stillness, reflection, and the measured rhythm of Anglican worship in one of the city’s most historic churches.
For the most distinctive Easter morning option, attend Central Baptist Church’s sunrise service. Central’s official calendar lists a Good Friday service on Friday 3 April from 09:00 to 10:30, a Sunrise Service on Sunday 5 April from 06:00 to 07:30, an Easter Sunday service from 08:30 to 09:30, and an Easter Sunday service at Arcadia from 10:30 to 11:30.
Central Baptist traces its roots in Pretoria back to 1889. Its Arcadia building opened in 1949. The sunrise service gives Easter Sunday a stronger sense of occasion than an ordinary later-morning service, due to the beauty of the African sunrise in Pretoria.
