Social Research Foundation polling shows deep pessimism about South Africa’s direction among black respondents and ANC supporters in eThekwini, Johannesburg, and Tshwane.
Metro Voters Say SA is Going the Wrong Way

Respondents were asked whether they believe the country is going in the right direction or the wrong direction.

In eThekwini, 92% of black respondents said South Africa is going in the wrong direction, while 1% said it is going in the right direction. Among ANC supporters in that city, 82% said it was going in the wrong direction, while 8% said it was going in the right direction.

In Johannesburg, 87% of black respondents said South Africa is going in the wrong direction, while 11% said it is going in the right direction. Among ANC supporters in that city, 86% opted for “wrong direction”, while 7% said “right direction”.

In Tshwane, 59% of black respondents said South Africa is going in the wrong direction, while 34% said it is going in the right direction. Among ANC supporters in that city, 29% picked the wrong direction, while 58% thought the country was moving in the right direction.

At the time of the poll, Johannesburg and eThekwini were ANC-led metros, while Tshwane was governed by an ActionSA mayor in a governing arrangement in which the ANC was, in practice, a central power broker.r.
