Police in Ecuador said five severed human heads were found hanging from ropes on a beach in Puerto Lopez, in Manabi province, as the country faces escalating drug-related violence.

Authorities said a sign was left at the scene threatening alleged extortionists targeting fishermen, and linked the display to conflict between criminal groups fighting over trafficking routes.
