One Suspect Killed as High Speed Chase Ends in Mitchells Plain Shootout

A police pursuit from Nyanga ended in gunfire this morning after officers from the National Intervention Unit tracked a Toyota Hilux carrying suspected armed criminals. When the vehicle reached Jakes Gerwel Drive in Mitchells Plain, its occupants allegedly opened fire on police, prompting officers to shoot back. One suspect was killed and four others were arrested.
Police recovered an AK 47 rifle, two 9mm pistols, and ammunition from the scene. The fleeing vehicle also crashed into two private cars during the chase. The surviving suspects, aged 27 to 45, are expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on charges including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. IPID has begun its mandatory investigation into the fatal shooting.
