Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, Northern Cape, is under fire after appointing former SRC president Israel Mulovhedzi as a student assistant in the registrar’s office, despite his prior assault conviction linked to a 2023 attack on a first-year student. The decision has drawn strong criticism from student groups and gender-based-violence activists.

Members of Parliament condemned the hiring, saying it undermines efforts to curb campus violence. They have demanded accountability from university leadership and the Higher Education Department over how Mulovhedzi was approved for a student-facing post.
