A 19-year-old is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court in connection with the Philippi East mass murder, after being arrested in Worcester last week.

The shooting happened at an illegal liquor outlet in the Marikana informal settlement on 17 January 2026, when three suspects reportedly opened fire, killing nine people and injuring another.
