Police in Limpopo have issued a safety warning after a 14-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled pit at an illegal mining site. The incident occurred while the child was swimming in a disused excavation left by illegal miners.

South African Police Service urged communities and parents to keep children away from abandoned mining areas, warning that rain filled pits pose a serious and often hidden danger. An inquest has been opened.
