Trump’s no-good for SA, say South Africans

Earlier this year, the Social Research Foundation (SRF) tested the opinions of South Africans towards Donald Trump.

In answer to a question on whether Trump’s election was good for South Africa, roughly a quarter of South Africans thought that it was, whilst 60% thought it was not.

Among political party supporters, over 60% of Freedom Front+ voters thought Mr Trump’s election was a good thing, whilst just 10% of EFF voters agreed.

Almost 40% of both English and Afrikaans first-language speakers thought Mr Trump’s election was a good thing compared to 35% of Zulu speakers and just 6% of Xhosa speakers.

Views were split virtually evenly between men and women.

This shows through the lens of political alignment that opinions on Trump mirror domestic divisions. Through the lens of public sentiment it highlights a prevailing skepticism of his influence on South Africa.
