The Springboks began their November tour in style, overpowering Japan 61-7 in heavy rain at Wembley. South Africa took early control, scoring through Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s penalty and tries from Aphelele Fassi, Makazole Mapimpi, and Jesse Kriel to lead 26-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Springboks’ maul and counter-attack flourished. Grant Williams darted over from close range, while replacements Kurt-Lee Arendse and Kwagga Smith added late tries as Japan’s defence faded. Japan managed a consolation score, but their handling errors and set-piece struggles told the story of the night.
Coach Rassie Erasmus said he was: “pleased with the Japan win but bracing for massive battles ahead,” crediting his side’s discipline in difficult conditions and warning of tougher challenges to come.
It was a statement of precision and power. The Boks’ kicking game, scrummaging, and tactical patience turned a slippery match into a clinical exhibition. As Erasmus refines combinations for the tests ahead, Wembley confirmed South Africa’s trademark control remains intact.
