Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has agreed to advance a new proposed oil pipeline running from Alberta, a province where Canada’s oil sands are located, to the Pacific coast aimed at boosting exports to Asian markets. The plan includes easing a coastal tanker ban and securing Alberta’s support by shelving planned federal emissions caps.

Environmental groups and some lawmakers say the deal weakens Canada’s climate commitments. The agreement has already prompted a Cabinet resignation and revived concerns over Indigenous consultation and environmental risks.
