China will impose safeguard measures adding an extra 55% tariff on some beef imports from countries including Australia and Brazil when shipments exceed newly set quotas, starting 1 January, 2026.

The measures will run for three years. China says an investigation found rising imports harmed domestic producers. The 2026 total quota is 2.7 million metric tons, with country allocations including Australia at about 205 000 tons and Brazil the largest share.
