A Pietermaritzburg High Court sitting has advanced efforts to reopen the inquest into the 1981 assassination of anti-apartheid lawyer Griffiths Mxenge. Former Security Branch members implicated in the case are securing legal representation, and the court has requested written arguments on whether the inquest should be formally revived.

The matter has been postponed to late April 2026 for further submissions. Mxenge’s family says a reopened inquest is essential to establish who ordered the killing and to place the full truth on record.
