France will reintroduce a national military service from 2026, with President Emmanuel Macron unveiling a voluntary 10-month programme for young adults. Officials say the move reflects Europe’s growing anxiety about Russia’s ambitions beyond Ukraine and the need to strengthen defence preparedness.

The scheme will begin with 3 000 volunteers and expand to 50 000 by 2035. Participants will receive monthly stipends and form part of a broader effort to build a combined force of professionals, reservists and trained civilians.
