A Home Affairs employee in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to five years in prison for falsifying death records to claim over R334 000 in insurance payouts. Dawn Celeste Pieterson, 46, used her access to the population register to register fake deaths from 2019 to 2022.

Pieterson was convicted on multiple fraud charges and will serve time for abusing her position.
