News24 reported that the military may have kept the civilian side of government in the dark for roughly two months about Iran’s role in the BRICS Plus naval exercise off Cape Town.

Defence Minister Angie Motshekga has ordered a board of inquiry to determine whether President Cyril Ramaphosa’s instruction that Iran take observer status was misrepresented or ignored. Reuters and the AP say the issue has drawn sharp US criticism.
