A proposal to overhaul how ANC leaders are elected will be put before the National General Council (NGC) in Johannesburg this week. The idea is to replace the current delegate system with direct voting by ordinary members, which supporters say would reduce vote buying and backroom deals.

The plan forms part of wider renewal debates at the NGC, where documents warn that corruption, money politics and factionalism are eroding the party’s support. Reform advocates argue that cleaner internal elections are essential if the ANC wants to restore credibility and remain competitive in future national polls.
