Solidarity has launched urgent court action after Johannesburg authorities removed its 70-metre banner on the M1 ahead of the G20 summit. The banner, which read: “Welcome to the most race regulated country in the world,” was taken down by the City without prior notice, prompting the union to accuse officials of censorship.

The union says all advertising fees were properly paid through an accredited agency and argues the removal violates its right to political expression. Solidarity has served papers on Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the Johannesburg Metro, demanding the banner be restored before the summit or face further legal steps.
