A suspected robber died on Wednesday morning after a failed cash in transit heist in Rustenburg’s central business district. Police say a Fidelity cash van crew was ambushed during routine collections, with armed attackers seizing a cash bag and the guard’s service pistol before fleeing on foot.

The van driver opened fire, hitting one suspect in the leg. According to police, the wounded man then fired back toward the vehicle and shot himself while on the ground, dying at the scene. The remaining suspects escaped with an undisclosed sum, and a manhunt is under way.
