Suspended Ekurhuleni metro police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi has appeared before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria to answer claims of corruption inside the EMPD. Testimony at the inquiry has linked him to irregular promotions, interference in internal investigations and allegedly giving blue light privileges to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The commission is probing whether senior officers used their positions to protect criminal interests instead of enforcing the law. Mkhwanazi’s appearance follows days of evidence from former city officials, and the inquiry is expected to influence possible criminal and disciplinary action once its findings are released.
