The Equality Court in Johannesburg has ruled that a transgender inmate must be granted access to hormone therapy, marking a legal first for South Africa’s correctional system. The Department of Correctional Services had previously denied treatment, calling it “cosmetic medication.”
Judge Denise Fisher found the refusal unlawful and discriminatory, ordering officials to comply with existing healthcare protocols for transgender prisoners under the department’s own operating procedures.
