Mark Oppenheimer: UCT is Trying to Remove Me for Talking On A Podcast

UCT's Council is deciding whether to remove Advocate Mark Oppenheimer over a podcast he appeared on.

11 min

The Council of the University of Cape Town (UCT) is considering removing Advocate Mark Oppenheimer after he appeared on a podcast with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, where he criticised antisemitism at UCT and the influence of Islamist groups at the university. Retired Judge Mahomed Navsa found that his statements breached the Council's Code of Conduct, damaged UCT’s reputation, and went beyond his obligations as a Council member. Navsa recommended his expulsion. Oppenheimer, an elected alumni representative on UCT’s Council and executive director of the Free Speech Union South Africa, explains the findings and why he disputes them. He also discusses an earlier complaint involving Professor Glenda Gray, UCT’s Israel boycott, the R200 million withdrawn by the Donald Gordon Foundation, and his claim that 300 Jewish students chose Stellenbosch over UCT this year.
