Earlier today, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis declared victory in the City of Cape Town.
Although only a quarter of Cape Town’s votes had been counted at the time, Hill-Lewis predicted a 58% win, securing an outright majority. His confidence was founded on internal party data and voting station tallies.
The DA has ruled Cape Town outright since 2011. In the run-up to the 2026 elections, a number of polls had considered the city to be in the balance, with the primary threat coming from coloured nationalist parties like Gayton McKenzie’s Patriotic Alliance and Patricia de Lille’s GOOD.
