Cape Town’s plans for a baboon sanctuary have sparked controversy among conservationists and animal welfare groups, after proposals to capture and confine two Cape Peninsula baboon troops in a fenced enclosure drew fresh criticism.

Groups argue the plan risks stress, conflict and injuries among baboons and want the City to prioritise non-lethal measures such as better waste control and baboon proofing. The City says planning is continuing despite opposition.
